Western rowels are spurs with a toothed wheel that rotates. Western rowels are available in a range of severity. A rowel with many small teeth is considered less severe than one with only a few large teeth. The teeth of the rowel are dulled at the edges and should not cause injury to the horse. Western rowels often have small curved up hooks on the front called chap guards. These guards prevent the chaps from interfering with the rowel.
